Queijo de Figo (Fig Cake)

'Queijo de Figo', means Fig Cheese, although this recipe is not a cheese cake, nor it has any kind of cheese.

t's name is cheese because of its final color and aspect. A very good tradicional dessert specifically from Algarve.


  • 270g almond meal
  • 270g dry figs
  • 1,5 dl water
  • 250g sugar
  • 1tablespoon powdered cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon anise seeds
  • lemon peels
  • 30g powdered chocolate
  • sugar to powder

First, you have to torrefy, separatly, the almond meal, and the figs in the oven. In the end, save a portion of each fruit for posterior decoration.
Take a pot and heat it with the water, the sugar, the cinnamon, the anise, the lemon peels and the chocolate. Let it boil ('til you can form a route in the bottom of the pot, when passing the cooking spoon).
In the shredder, shred the roasted almond meal and put it in the sugar soup you just made. Let it boil for 3minutes.
Shred the roasted fig with a knife and join it too, to the previous preparation, letting it boil for another 3 minutes or so. Take it from the heat and put it all on a tray, powdering it with some sugar. Let it cool.
After it's cold, shape it like morgados and powder it with sugar. Decorate it, as you like, you can use some of the figs and almonds you left apart, and serve it.
