Portugal has no less than 240 beaches that were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag standard.

The Algarve is famous for its wonderful climate, and its beautiful beaches.


There are 69 beaches in Algarve with Blue Flag.

The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches, according to its water quality, environmental management and education, safety, cleanliness and facilities.


Almost every beach in Algarve has life-guards during the summer season.
You should always pay attention to the indications given by the life-guards and follow the indications of the colour coded flags posted on the beaches. Which are:



Green Flag

The Green Flag means it's safe to enter the water, and to swim at will.


Nevertheless, you should pay atention and respect the indications given by the life-guards should he aproach you.



Yellow Flag

The Yellow Flag means you may enter the water, and swim, but to be careful.


Pay atention and don't go far from the coast, and never go out of your depth. Respect the indications given by the life-guards should he aproach you, or change the flag.



Red Flag

The Red Flag means it's NOT safe to enter the water, and swim.
Nevertheless, you could stay in the sand to do other activities, but you should not go into the water, unless the life-guard change the flag.



Chequered Flag

The Chequered Flag means that the beached has a life-guard, but he is temporarily unavailable. And the area is temporararily without a safe-guard.
It is next to a green, yellow or red flag, that indicates the safety of the beach.



Blue Flag

You know when you are in a a Blue Flagged beach because every blue fag beach has a blue flag, like this, along with the normal green, yellow or red flag.
